Swinkels Family Brewers is always looking to get better. And that's for a simple reason, explains Peter Korsten, Global Lead Engineer Packaging for Swinkels Family: “you can keep operating in the European market only if you work with the best equipment.”
What's the best we can expect when it comes to crown feeding?
Above all, it has to help ensure product integrity. That's what led Bavaria to choose a hygienic offset feeder, composed of a Gebo OptiFeed® plus a Flat Top air conveyor solution. “We don’t have to deal with moisture or contamination problems any more, now that all the potential dust from caps or crowns is no longer transported to the capper,” Peter Korsten says.
Then, you have to ensure that crown feeding does not detract from line performance. That was a sensitive issue for Bavaria, since they were experiencing crown quality defects that were sometimes minor but still capable of stopping crown supply. And that was stopping the entire line.
This problem was solved by integrating a control camera in the Gebo OptiFeed®. This camera can check the crown’s physical characteristics and logo, and it's coupled with an ejection system for non-compliant crowns. This is an exclusive innovation from Sidel, which Peter Korsten much appreciates, thanks to the production gains it offers: “now we verify and sort everything upstream, and we don't have any more filler stoppages. The line can run for 12 straight hours without the slightest problem, thanks to this new feeder solution.”
Lastly, the feeder had to be easy to adapt to the diversity of production. In this context, the Gebo OptiFeed performs really well, thanks to its ease of format changeover, its reliability and its ergonomics. And that's not a minor consideration for Bavaria, which has 40 different brands! But the gains are as significant as the challenge itself, as Peter Korsten explains: “we're talking about really significant numbers, since we have 15 to 20 format changeovers each week!”
As Peter Korsten sums up, the Gebo OptiFeed® provides a complete solution to Bavaria’s crown feeder issues: “fewer production losses, less maintenance, fast format changeovers, less waste, an affordable solution, etc.: we’re delighted with this solution!” Bavaria's satisfaction is demonstrated by their order of a new machine. Delivery is expected by the end of the year!
